LHC™ Low Head Composite Ingot Casting Technology

The LHCTM Low Head Composite Casting Process is Wagstaff’s flagship ingot casting product and was developed to maximize ingot quality and casting pit recoveries.

In addition to utilizing production and quality benefits of Wagstaff SplitJet™ Curl Reduction Technology, LHC molds incorporate a graphite bore into its aluminum mold – a patented technology that is proven to produce premium cast surfaces and ideal metallurgical properties in rolling ingot.

This graphite bore serves as a reservoir for casting lubricant, using only 3-5% of the normal amount of oil consumed in conventional direct chill casting.   The graphite bore is also replaceable which significantly extends the life of the mold.

Ingots produced by the LHC process have minimal butt curl and very small shell zones, resulting in superior surfaces and high recovery rates.  The high quality of ingots produced with LHC molds yield significant savings in downstream scalping and edge trimming operations.

Benefits of LHC Ingot Casting Technology:

  • No mold lubrication oil system required
  • Reduced mold cooling water treatment costs
  • Superior ingot surface
  • Long mold life
  • SplitJet Curl Reduction Technology minimizes butt curl which results in reduced bleedouts, creating a safer casting environment
  • Most common alloys can be cast through the same mold
  • Reduced scalping
